"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. A host of high-profile admirers have also begged for the role.

The evidence suggests something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a close unit. Their videos frequently feature them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to form a group."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The group are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The project came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that strange transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed resilience required a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The trio's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic tales.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global following.

Yet the band will forever be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
